Apostille and document legalization

In order for documents issued in one country to be valid in another, an official document must be certified by the Apostille or legalized.

What type of legalization to choose – apostilization or legalization? 

- It depends on the state in which the document will be used. If the document is to be used in a country which is a party to the 1961 Hague Convention, then Apostille is required. Documents are certified by Apostille in Notarial offices of the Republic of Lithuania.

- If the document is issued to a country that is not a member of the 1961 Hague Convention, it is subject to consular legalization by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Lithuania

How much does an Apostille and document legalization cost?

• One Apostille costs € 18.15. The cost of the Apostilization service in our office is € 15.00
• The cost of legalizing of one document in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Lithuania is € 20.  The cost of legalization service is € 80.

     General information:

• Each document is apostilled separately.
• Only documents that were issued in the Republic of Lithuania can be apostilled and legalized.
• If a person needs to apostille documents that were issued with the LSSR coat of arms, these documents must be renewed, first.
• Whether it is necessary for the customer to apostille or legalize the document, it is up to the customer to check with the office where the document will be delivered.
• The Apostille is written in two languages ​​– Lithuanian and English, when translating a document into English. If the translation is into another foreign language, the Apostille is translated into the language of the country where the document will be used.

What documents are apostilled?

The apostille can only be affixed to documents issued by official authorities. The document on which the apostille is affixed in Lithuania more often are:

• Certificate of no criminal record with an apostille, which is required for work or study abroad.
• Local municipal statements of residence that are required for work or study abroad.
• Certificates confirming the composition of the family with an apostille that are required for work or study abroad.
• Apostille on the birth certificate for legalization of the document for international use.
• Apostille on the marriage certificate for confirmation of the legality of marriage in other countries.
• Apostille on a diploma or certificate, that is an apostille for educational documents to confirm qualifications abroad.
• Apostille on a power of attorney, which is a certificate of authority at the international level.
• Court decisions – apostillation of official decisions for presentation abroad.
• Notarized statements, powers of attorney — legal certification of documents for use abroad.
• Documents of legal entities (that is copies of registration certificates, charters, etc.)

The apostille is not affixed to the originals of passports, identity cards, driver's licenses, and other documents. An apostille can only be placed on notarized copies of these documents.

Double apostille

There are cases in which, when making a document for certain countries, it is required to affix a double apostille. This means that the first apostille is placed on the original or on a notarized copy of the document, after which a notarized translation is performed; hereat the second apostille is affixed.
